ASELI Mentors

The Institute is a one-year leadership development program designed to improve outcomes for all students by preparing a diverse group of educators for leadership roles in special education.

Goals of the Institute

Goal #1
To increase the capacity of and retain a network of aspiring diverse special education leaders at the local education agency level to improve systems serving children with disabilities and their families.

Goal #2
To develop, improve, and expand system-level collaborative practices between SEA, LEA, Parent Center, IHE, and other children-serving agencies to ensure the delivery and maintenance of a special education leadership development program.

Goal #3
To increase the number of diverse early intervention and special education leaders at the local education agency level with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to improve systems serving students with disabilities and their families

Why should you apply?

How long is the commitment?
The commitment is for one year.

How much time do I need to committ to?
The Institute is planned for 1 day a month 8:30 - 3:30 (EST).

What are the expectations of mentors?

  • Attend all monthly presentations (1 day a month)
  • Read various assigned readings each month. Actively engage in discussions.
  • Mentor an aspiring leader in special education and collaborate in writing a professional log and a vocabulary book.
  • Mentors and mentees are expected to meet at both ICASE conferences.
  • Mentors will be the presenters for special education leadership topics in the afternoons of the ASELI workdays.

What will mentors get out of the institute?
Increased capacity in bias, antiracism, academic and behavioral stereotypes, culturally sustaining instruction, intersectionality, ableism, discrimination, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
